How does NLP add value to your skill base?
The approach currently practised is limited in that it focuses purely on client behaviour. In other words, we consider our clients’ exercise habits and diet, tell them what they need to do (behaviour) and, in some cases, teach them how to do it (capability). As we know, not all clients are receptive to our suggestions, and for those who are, progress can still be slow. At best, the most we can do is hope that our clients will remain sufficiently motivated to comply with our instructions. Sadly, however, as you have no doubt experienced, the majority tend not to. It is only a minority of clients who change their lifestyle over a long enough period to ensure any significant degree of change.
We are all aware that something more needs to happen if a client is to experience success in the long term, and it is here that NLP is invaluable. What NLP can offer is a more integrated, mind-body approach that allows you to consider your clients’ thoughts and feelings (beliefs and values, identity). After the training, not only will you be able to help your clients identify their negative thought patterns, you will be able to help them establish more useful patterns that will support them in pursuit of their goals. It is this understanding and ability to intervene which is unprecedented, and which will enable you to help clients stay motivated. With your support the people you work with will be able to create real change in their lives and adopt healthier ways of being, permanently.
